Former Sokoto State governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal has dismissed his detention by Nigeria’s anti-graft agency as an act of political intimidation, pledging to continue his fight for what he calls equitable and democratic governance. The senator representing Sokoto South was released on bail this week after the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission questioned him over an alleged N189 billion fraud during his tenure.

Tambuwal rejects EFCC probe as political

Returning to Sokoto on Thursday, Tambuwal assured a large crowd of supporters that he would not succumb to silence or blackmail. “I believe I shall be vindicated, and victory shall be ours,” he told the cheering audience at his residence.

The EFCC confirmed it is investigating the former two-term governor for alleged misappropriation of public funds.

The African Democratic Congress, an opposition party, described the case as a political witch-hunt aimed at weakening rivals before the 2027 elections.

Focus shifts to Sokoto political battles

Tambuwal recounted being denied bail based on personal recognition despite his record as a former Speaker of the House of Representatives and a sitting senator.

He said he was remanded in a detention cell after the EFCC insisted on sureties from top civil servants.

According to Punch, he also accused the Sokoto State government of launching a “kangaroo” inquiry to discredit him. The probe has intensified political tensions in Sokoto, where Tambuwal has emerged as a central figure in the opposition’s plans for future contests.
