President Bola Tinubu has commended the Super Eagles for their resilience despite a dramatic loss that ended Super Eagles World Cup hopes on Sunday night.
The president said the team fought hard against DR Congo and deserved national support as Nigeria turns toward its Africa Cup of Nations campaign.
Nigeria’s attempt to reach the 2026 FIFA World Cup came to an emotional halt during the playoff clash in Morocco. The Eagles battled to a 1–1 draw after extra time before losing 4–3 in a tense penalty shootout. The result pushed DR Congo into the Inter-Confederation playoff and eliminated Nigeria for a second consecutive World Cup cycle.
Tinubu encourages super eagles to let go of the loss
Tinubu, in a statement issued by his spokesman Bayo Onanuga, said the loss was tough for the country but should not overshadow the team’s effort. He praised the players for pushing through the qualifiers and winning the first playoff match, noting that the journey showed determination even if the outcome was disappointing.
The president urged the football federation and technical staff to re-evaluate gaps exposed during the campaign. He said Nigeria must “plug all loopholes” and rebuild with clear intent. According to him, the loss should mark a turning point for Nigerian football and an opportunity for deeper strategic reforms.
Tinubu also called for unity around the team as preparations advance for AFCON 2026 in Morocco. He said the squad must regain confidence quickly and focus on restoring national pride during the continental tournament. He stressed that the players have the capacity to recover and that national support remains essential as they enter the next phase.
