Adewumi Adeyemi, a member of the Osun State House of Assembly, has called for an urgent review of Nigeria’s fragile security framework following the abduction of 25 schoolgirls in Kebbi State.
The attack, which left a staff member dead, has raised alarm about the nation’s ability to protect its most vulnerable citizens. The incident occurred early on Monday at Government Girls’ Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga, in Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area. Armed assailants stormed the school at around 4:00 a.m., firing as they forced entry and abducted students.
Lawmaker warns of Nigeria’s fragile security framework
Adeyemi claimed that the kidnapping showed how inadequate the country’s intelligence collecting, preventive measures, and coordination amongst agencies were. He said the repeated targeting of schools reflects deep vulnerabilities in Nigeria’s approach to internal security.
“There are moments when a nation must pause and ask itself hard questions,” Adeyemi said. Adeyemi claimed that the kidnapping showed how inadequate the country’s intelligence collecting, preventive measures, and coordination amongst agencies were.
He emphasized that gaps in intelligence, slow response capacity, unclear command structures, and weak preventive systems allow attackers to operate freely. He warned that these problems threaten national sovereignty and need immediate strategic action.
Government urged to strengthen Nigeria’s weak security framework
The lawmaker urged authorities to put school safety and community-based early warning systems first. He also called for better equipment, clearer mandates, and more support for security agencies. Officials highlighted fortified school safety, efficient operational protocols, and coordinated inter-agency strategies as key reforms.
“Nigeria cannot continue this way. Our children are unsafe, and officers remain vulnerable. Strengthening internal systems is the only way to safeguard our nation,” Adeyemi said.
He added that leadership at all levels must place citizens’ welfare above political or administrative considerations. The lawmaker’s call underscores growing public concern over recurring mass abductions and persistent bandit attacks across the country.
