  • President calls for surrender of illegal weapons.
  • Government provides frameworks to support herders’ ranching shift.

As part of a strategy to cut down on violence between farmers and herders, President Bola Tinubu has told herdsmen all throughout Nigeria to stop open grazing, give up their illegal guns, and switch to ranching.

The president said on Wednesday that modern ranch-based activities are necessary for long-term livestock production and national unity.

Tinubu said the Federal Government is prioritising long-term solutions to violent confrontations that have destabilised several northern and central states. “Ranching is now the path forward for sustainable livestock farming and national harmony,” he said, further urging herder associations to seize the opportunity and collaborate with the new Ministry of Livestock to modernise operations.

The president also called on religious institutions, particularly mosques and churches in vulnerable regions, to coordinate with security agencies to protect worshippers during prayers and gatherings. He noted that clashes over land use have consistently fuelled insecurity, especially in the Middle Belt, leaving numerous casualties in recent months.

Government steps up security while promoting ranching

Tinubu highlighted that the new livestock policy aims to safeguard both farmers and herders while reducing land-use conflicts. The federal government, in partnership with state authorities, plans to provide frameworks for ranch development and implement measures to curb illegal arms circulation.

Meanwhile, the Edo State Government intensified security after a self-proclaimed bandit threatened communities in the Edo Central Senatorial District. Governor Monday Okpebholo called a high-level security meeting to reassure citizens that they would be safe and to tell them to stay calm and alert.

Recently, the Edo State Special Security Squad detained two people they thought were kidnappers in Egbai Community, Ovia North-East LGA. They did this after gathering information and watching them closely.

The state government also told people not to spread false information and promised to keep residents, commuters, and investors safe. This shows that the government is taking a coordinated approach to security while national livestock regulations make it easier for peaceful herders to switch to ranching.
