The Oyo State Police Command has arrested a 45-year-old man, Adeniyi Benjamin, for allegedly running an unlicensed medical facility in Ibadan and treating patients, particularly for fertility problems, without being a qualified doctor.
Operatives from the command’s Monitoring Unit picked him up on Oct. 2 at Life Is Good Hospital in the Olodo area, acting on intelligence about his activities. Police spokesperson Ayanlade Olayinka disclosed the arrest in a statement.
According to the police, officers found Benjamin attending to patients and administering treatments when they arrived.
They recovered two weighing scales, four Quantum Magnetic Resonance Body Analysers, a stethoscope, a carton of assorted medicines and specimen bottles from the facility.
Suspect’s alleged admission
The statement quoted Benjamin as saying during preliminary investigation that he had worked as a quack for about seven years.
He allegedly admitted he held no licence of any kind and that he specialized in fertility-related treatment, which he administered at the facility.
Olayinka said the arrest highlighted the dangers of seeking care from unqualified practitioners, especially in sensitive areas such as fertility treatment.
Consequently, the command urged residents to verify the credentials and registration status of anyone offering medical services before using them.
It also asked the public to report suspicious facilities or people presenting themselves as medical practitioners without verifiable credentials to the police or the relevant regulators.
Investigation continues
The command said investigation was ongoing to establish the full extent of the suspect’s activities and whether anyone else helped run the facility. Appropriate action, Olayinka added, would follow in line with the law.
Police did not say how many patients Benjamin treated or whether any complaints of harm had been lodged. Meanwhile, they have not disclosed whether he has been charged or arraigned. The confession is as reported by the police and has not been independently verified.
