Soaring Healthcare Costs Push Nigerians Towards Poverty

Nigerian Medical Association Calls for Action on Drug Prices

by Victor Adetimilehin

Nigerians are battling a wave of rising healthcare costs, with many struggling to afford essential medications and medical care. This financial burden is pushing a significant portion of the population deeper into poverty, according to the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA).

Dr. Uche Ojinmah, the NMA president, addressed this critical issue at a recent webinar titled “Addressing escalating costs of medicines.” The webinar served as a platform for discussing the alarming rise in medication and medical consumable prices across Nigeria and brainstorming solutions to this national challenge.

High Costs and Delayed Solutions

The exorbitant costs of medicines and medical supplies are creating a significant barrier to healthcare access in Nigeria. The webinar, organized by TheCable to commemorate its 10th anniversary, aimed to ignite a comprehensive dialogue on this issue. Stakeholders from various sectors came together to identify practical solutions that can alleviate the situation and ensure equitable access to essential healthcare services.

In February 2024, Nigerians were offered a glimmer of hope when the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Pate, announced plans for an executive order aimed at curbing the escalating drug prices. This measure was intended to provide short-term relief. However, two months later, the government has yet to sign the order, leaving Nigerians grappling with the financial burden of increasingly expensive medications amidst a difficult economic climate.

Doctors Outline Path Forward

Dr. Ojinmah emphasized the importance of a healthy population for a productive economy. He highlighted the negative feedback loop created by high healthcare costs. While those with financial means can afford treatment and maintain good health, the underprivileged struggle to pay for medical care, pushing them further into poverty.

The NMA president urged the government to prioritize implementing effective policies that improve healthcare access and affordability. He advocated for increased enrollment in the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) as a way to reduce out-of-pocket expenses for patients. The NHIS helps spread the cost of medical care across a wider pool of individuals, making it more accessible for low-income Nigerians.

Furthermore, Dr. Ojinmah proposed the establishment of a health sector development bank. This institution would provide financial support to the domestic pharmaceutical industry, potentially leading to lower drug prices and a more robust healthcare ecosystem.

Urgent Need for Action to Prevent Social Unrest

Dr. Ojinmah expressed his concerns that the situation could escalate into social unrest if the government fails to take decisive action. He stressed the urgency of moving beyond the planning stage and implementing practical solutions. Nigerians deserve affordable and accessible healthcare, and the NMA is calling on the government to make this a priority.

The Nigerian government faces mounting pressure to address the rising cost of healthcare. The NMA’s call to action reflects the growing concerns of Nigerians who are struggling to afford essential medical care. Finding solutions to this complex issue will require a multi-pronged approach that combines government intervention, industry development, and increased access to health insurance.
