The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has intensified its fight against illegal oil refining activities in the Niger Delta region. In a recent operation conducted between June 18th and 22nd, 2024, the Air Component of Operation Delta Safe successfully destroyed 13 illegal refining sites across Rivers, Bayelsa, and Imo states. Additionally, the operation targeted logistical networks used by oil thieves, leading to the destruction of seven Cotonou boats and the dispersal of several J-5 buses suspected of being involved in crude oil siphoning.
Precision Strikes Disrupt Criminal Operations
Nigerian Air Force spokesperson Air Vice Marshall Edward Gabkwet released a statement detailing the operation’s success. He highlighted the targeted nature of the airstrikes, ensuring maximum impact on illegal activities while minimizing collateral damage. One such strike occurred near the Imo River on June 18th, where a site with seven large storage tanks was identified and destroyed. Following the airstrike, several individuals suspected of being involved in the illegal operation were observed fleeing the scene.
In another operation conducted on June 19th, the NAF targeted an illegal refining site and a canoe filled with stolen crude oil in Wilcourt, Rivers State. Furthermore, gunboats used by the oil thieves for transportation and security were also destroyed in the airstrike. This comprehensive approach aimed to disrupt the entire operation of the criminal group.
Adapting to Evolving Tactics by Oil Thieves
The recent operation demonstrates the NAF’s ability to adapt its strategies in response to the evolving tactics of oil thieves. On June 22nd, aircrews conducting a routine patrol spotted five J-5 buses, typically used for passenger transportation, near the Imo River. Upon closer inspection, it was revealed that the vehicles were likely modified to function as mini tankers, attempting to siphon crude oil from nearby illegal refineries. Moreover, the NAF responded swiftly, destroying the refineries and dispersing the modified vehicles. This incident highlights the resourcefulness of criminal groups involved in oil theft and underscores the need for the NAF to remain vigilant and adaptable.
Air Vice Marshall Gabkwet emphasized the importance of enhanced intelligence gathering and air-to-ground coordination as critical factors contributing to the operation’s success. He explained that these advancements, coupled with the NAF’s increased agility and resilience, have significantly improved the effectiveness of their counter-oil theft operations. Furthermore, Gabkwet stressed the ongoing nature of these efforts, stating that the airstrikes will continue until the activities of oil thieves are significantly reduced. Curtailing illegal oil refineries is crucial for protecting Nigeria’s oil resources, a vital component of the nation’s economy.
The Wider Impact of Oil Theft
Illegal oil refineries not only rob the Nigerian government of revenue but also contribute to environmental degradation in the Niger Delta. The destruction of these refineries represents a significant step towards environmental protection and economic security in the region. The NAF’s ongoing operations demonstrate their commitment to combating this complex issue and safeguarding Nigeria’s natural resources.
