A prominent diaspora group has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and law enforcement agencies to maintain neutrality in the upcoming September 21 governorship election in Edo State.

At a press conference held in Benin City, Deputy Director-General of the Asue/Ogie Campaign Council, Raymond Osaremen, stressed the importance of impartiality in safeguarding the integrity of the electoral process.

Neutrality of INEC and law enforcement agencies stressed

Speaking on behalf of the group, Osaremen warned that any form of bias or interference from INEC or the police could damage the public’s trust in the election.

“The neutrality of the Independent National Electoral Commission and law enforcement agencies is critical,” Osaremen stated. “Any deviation from neutrality could undermine the trust that the people have placed in the electoral process.”

Osaremen emphasized that both INEC and the police must uphold the principles of fairness and transparency, ensuring that all processes are carried out without intimidation or manipulation.

Furthermore, he added, “Law enforcement agencies must perform their duties with professionalism and impartiality, avoiding actions that could intimidate or suppress voters.”

Voters urged to exercise their rights

The diaspora group also called on voters to actively participate in the democratic process, encouraging them to cast their votes without fear.

“Your vote is your voice,” Osaremen also said. “No voter should be discouraged from casting their ballot. We urge citizens to report any cases of voter intimidation or harassment to the relevant authorities.”

According to a report by Punch, he also stressed the importance of protecting the integrity of the voting process. “Voters must remain vigilant, and any reports of electoral malpractice should be swiftly investigated by the relevant bodies.”

Ensuring transparency at all levels

The group further called on INEC to properly train its officials to manage the election transparently.

“INEC must ensure that its officials are well-equipped to handle the election process, and any reported irregularities should be addressed immediately,” Osaremen remarked.

The group, however, reaffirmed its commitment to a peaceful and transparent election, urging all stakeholders, including political parties, civil society organizations, and law enforcement agencies, to work together in upholding democratic values.
