Senior military officers bow out after decades of service

15 senior commanders from the Nigerian Army’s Artillery Corps have officially retired, crowning their remarkable careers.

The Nigerian Army School of Artillery at Kachia, Kaduna State, held a pulling-out ceremony to honor the retired officers, which included four Brigadier Generals and eleven Major Generals.

Retirement of senior officers

On October 19, 2024, the ceremony honored the careers of the retired commanders who made important contributions to Nigeria’s military operations.

Throughout their careers, these commanders have served in vital battlefield positions in the Artillery Corps, which is renowned for supporting ally armies with powerful weaponry.

In appreciation of their many years of service and contributions, the Nigerian Army announced these commanders’ retirement on social media.

Major General James Myam (retd.), one of the retirees, conveyed his appreciation for a rewarding career.

He thanked President Bola Tinubu for the chance to serve and attributed their accomplishment to divine grace as he reflected on their journey from officer cadets to senior officers. Additionally, he commended Lt Gen Taoreed Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff, for his guidance and dedication,

Reflections and advice for officers in service

During the event, General Myam emphasized the importance of loyalty and vigilance for officers still in active service.

Moreover he urged them to remain committed to upholding the Nigerian Constitution and supporting the democratically elected government. He also highlighted the role of security consciousness in ensuring the success of military operations across the country.

According to Punch, the retired officer further extended his appreciation to the families, friends, instructors, and mentors who had supported him and his colleagues throughout their careers.

His reflections on the early days at the Nigerian Defence Academy were filled with nostalgia, as he recalled the challenges and rewards of their military journey.

Honoring military leadership

Both active and retired military personnel attended the ceremony, including Major General Alwali Kazir (retd.), the former Chief of Army Staff.

Furthermore, as it signifies the close of one chapter and the start of a legacy within the military organization, the event highlighted the respect and appreciation that the Nigerian Army accords to its top commanders upon their retirement.

A noteworthy occasion, the pulling-out march served as a reminder to Nigeria’s military officers of the value of leadership, commitment, and patriotism.
