Nigerian motorists have been advised by President Bola Tinubu to buy petrol for N1,000 per liter or use compressed natural gas(CNG) at N200 per cubic meter.
Tinubu, speaking at a meeting with NIPCO executives in Abuja, said his administration’s energy diversification strategy must include a transition to CNG.
In response, CNG as a solution to rising petrol prices
Citing the cost benefits of adopting CNG, the President said it is cleaner and cheaper compared to petrol. ‘This would not only lower consumers fuel costs, but also help reduce the country’s carbon emissions,’ Tinubu said.
Tinubu says CNG is a ‘cleaner and more affordable fuel’ that helps reduce the carbon footprint and save consumers substantial money on the acquisition of fuel.
Chief amongst the government’s efforts in promoting CNG infrastructure and the free conversion of commercial vehicles from petrol to gas, is the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI).
NIPCO’s place in Nigeria’s energy transition
NIPCO has been instrumental in pushing the ‘Switch to CNG’ campaign that has raised awareness among the general public and further energised the country’s energy transition plan, Tinubu said.
NIPCO’s director, Ramesh Kasangra, said the company remained resolved to invest in infrastructure to make CNG accessible across Nigeria. The President’s support is much appreciated and will continue to work with Government to expand the use of CNG as another viable fuel option.
