In a heart-wrenching incident that occurred in the Dinyavo area of Jalingo, Taraba State, a family of four has tragically lost their lives due to electrocution. The incident unfolded around 11 a.m. yesterday, casting a pall of sorrow over the local residents.
The Spokesman of the Taraba State Police Command, Abdullahi Usman, officially confirmed the incident, attributing the fatalities to a suspected power surge.
According to Usman’s statement, “At approximately 11:00 hours on October 2, 2023, information received from a credible source revealed that a house located in the Dinyavoh area of Jalingo was engulfed in flames. Detectives from the GRA division of the Taraba command were swiftly dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, a grim discovery was made: a family of four lay on the ground, bearing burns all over their bodies, indicating a likely case of electrocution.”
The victims have been identified as Mr. Remond Ofonbuk, a 44-year-old male, Mrs. Mfonbong Remond, a female, and their two children, Hevean Remond, a 15-year-old male, and First Remond, a 13-year-old female.
The spokesperson elaborated on the incident, explaining that as power was being restored in the vicinity, a transformer in the area malfunctioned, causing a surge in electric voltage that affected multiple houses in the neighborhood, eventually resulting in the tragic outbreak of a fire that inflicted severe burns on the victims.
Despite the immediate efforts of detectives who promptly evacuated the injured family members to FMC Jalingo for medical treatment, the victims were, regrettably, pronounced dead by the attending medical doctor at the Federal Medical Centre.
Currently, the remains of the deceased have been transferred to the hospital’s mortuary, where they await autopsy as part of the ongoing investigation aimed at establishing the precise cause of this devastating incident. The entire community is left in mourning as they grapple with this heartbreaking loss, and authorities are working diligently to unravel the circumstances surrounding this tragic event.
