In a major stride towards youth empowerment, the Nchoke Autonomous Community in Ideato South Council of Imo State has earmarked fifty million naira to train 2,000 young individuals in various entrepreneurial skills. This move, part of the “Nchoke Skills Acquisition Initiative,” aims to significantly reduce unemployment and social vices within the community.
According to a report by The Guardian, the selected youths, hailing from the seven villages constituting the community, will undergo training in diverse skill sets. These include fashion design, hairdressing, barbering, carpentry, computer and mobile phone repairs, and other economically viable skills like event planning, catering, and auto mechanics.
During the initiative’s launch, the scheme’s sponsors, Dr Azubuike Erinugha and Mr John Durumba emphasized its potential to foster community growth and development by equipping youths with essential skills. Post-training, participants will be equipped with various tools and equipment to kickstart their entrepreneurial journey.
“Nchoke Skills Acquisition Initiative is not just about skill development; it’s about opening doors to entrepreneurship and career opportunities for our youth,” Erinugha stated. Durumba echoed this sentiment, highlighting the initiative’s role in keeping youths engaged and away from negative influences.
Esteemed attendees at the launch, including Chief Dr. Fidelity Ezewike, Chief Joachim Olumba, HRH Eze Christopher Obieshi, and other notable community leaders, lauded the program. They stressed the enduring value of skill acquisition and encouraged beneficiaries to leverage this opportunity for personal and communal betterment.
Chief Olumba passionately noted, “Acquiring a skill is as crucial as life itself. It fills a monumental gap even education cannot fill.”
Participants like Chidera Uzoma and Chioma Alinor expressed gratitude towards the organizers. They pledged to utilize these skills to not only improve their lives but also contribute positively to their community.
The Nchoke Skills Acquisition Initiative stands as a beacon of hope and progress in Imo State, potentially setting a benchmark for community-driven youth empowerment across Nigeria.
