The Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) has issued a strong call to President Bola Tinubu to urgently declare a state of emergency on the nation’s security situation. Speaking at a press conference in Lagos, PFN’s National President, Wale Oke, underscored the dire need for immediate action to address the escalating security challenges across Nigeria.
During the conference, following the inaugural joint National Association Council and National Executive Council meeting, Oke, surrounded by key executive members, pressed the president to consider the implementation of state police. This move aims to bolster the country’s security framework. Additionally, Oke proposed the reopening of Nigerian borders for food imports to mitigate the growing crisis of food insecurity and hunger, exacerbated by the removal of petroleum subsidies. He emphasized that such measures should include stringent security checks to prevent the smuggling of illegal goods into the country.
Oke’s appeal extended beyond government actions, calling on all Nigerians to unite behind President Tinubu. He stressed the importance of national unity in overcoming the array of challenges confronting the country, from severe security threats to economic instability and food shortages. “We are living at a very dangerous time, with challenges that threaten our future and corporate existence,” Oke stated, highlighting the unpredictability and rising cost of living affecting Nigerians daily.
The PFN leader’s message was clear: the time for political division has passed. With the Supreme Court’s validation of Tinubu’s presidency, Oke urged the nation to set aside differences and collaborate towards building a united Nigeria. He emphasized the critical role of collective effort in addressing the nation’s pressing issues, including insecurity, economic hardship, and youth restiveness.
Oke directly addressed President Tinubu, acknowledging his extensive political experience and deep understanding of Nigeria’s complexities. He called on the president to use his executive power decisively to tackle the insecurity plaguing the country. Oke highlighted the urgency of the situation, referencing threats made on social media to destabilize Nigeria following the election outcomes. He labeled those making such threats as criminals, urging the president to take firm action against them.
In closing, Oke reassured President Tinubu of the Pentecostal community’s support, which numbers over 65 million members. He promised prayers, advice, and essential information to aid the president in overcoming the severe security challenges facing Nigeria. Oke also touched on the critical issue of food insecurity, noting the daily struggle of Nigerians to afford basic necessities amid soaring prices.
The PFN’s call to action underscores the urgent need for comprehensive strategies to ensure national security, economic stability, and food availability. With a collaborative approach, embracing both government initiatives and community support, Nigeria can navigate its way through these tumultuous times
