Fiery Monday in Lagos as the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service (LSFRS) tackled multiple emergencies across the city, including a significant fire at a supermarket, a body recovered from under a trailer, and a gas explosion at a warehouse.
The drama unfolded on March 25th, with the first call coming in shortly after noon. Firefighters from Isolo, Ajegunle, and Bolade stations were dispatched to Globus Supermarket on Festac Link Road near Apple Junction in Amuwo Odofin. Upon arrival, crews encountered a large blaze engulfing the supermarket’s storage facility, spewing thick smoke into the sky.
“The fire was significant, and it was crucial to act quickly to prevent it from spreading to other parts of the supermarket and nearby buildings,” said Margaret Adeseye, Director of the LSFRS.
Thankfully, with the collaboration of the Federal Fire Service and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), firefighters successfully contained the inferno. During the operation, the team also performed a heroic rescue, saving a woman trapped inside the building.
“Our team members displayed exceptional courage and skill, not only in battling the blaze but also in rescuing the woman,” Adeseye commended.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Multiple Emergencies Strain Lagos Firefighters
The supermarket fire wasn’t the only incident keeping Lagos firefighters busy. Shortly after 1:00 PM, the Agege Fire Crew recovered the body of a woman, believed to be around 40 years old, from underneath a trailer on the Abule Egba flyover heading towards Sango on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway. The details surrounding this incident are still being pieced together.
Later in the day, another emergency unfolded at a warehouse on Coker Compound, Iganmu. The Ilupeju Fire Station responded to a gas explosion caused by the refilling of an FM200 Fire Protection System from a gas cylinder. Thankfully, firefighters were able to rescue two men who sustained injuries during the explosion. Both were reported to be in stable condition at a nearby hospital.
The final blaze of the day involved a warehouse fire at a multinational firm’s Ikeja facility. The LSFRS Ikeja Fire Crew responded promptly to the electrical fire originating from the building’s powerhouse and extinguished it before significant damage occurred.
“This was a busy day for our firefighters, highlighting the importance of fire safety measures and emergency preparedness,” Adeseye concluded. “We urge the public to remain vigilant and prioritize fire safety in their homes and workplaces.”
The LSFRS continues its unwavering commitment to safeguarding Lagos residents and businesses. Their swift response and skilled intervention undoubtedly prevented further damage and loss of life during this eventful day.
