Asharami Synergy, a key player in the Sahara Group’s downstream portfolio, has taken a bold step to champion the adoption of cleaner fuel alternatives in Nigeria. This initiative aligns with global efforts to reduce pollution and promote public health through the use of low sulfur fuels. At the Asharami Synergy 2024 Customer Forum, Managing Director Foluso Sobanjo highlighted the company’s unwavering commitment to leading Nigeria’s downstream sector towards greener practices.
Asharami Synergy has begun distributing fuels that adhere to the Afri-5 specifications set by the African Refiners and Distributors Association (ARDA). These specifications are in compliance with the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) of 2021, which mandates a sulfur content limit of 50 parts per million (ppm) in Gasoil/Diesel. This transition to low sulfur fuels represents a significant shift in the industry, marking a critical step towards reducing environmental pollution and fostering a healthier Nigerian society.
During the forum, Sobanjo addressed potential concerns regarding the new fuel specifications, particularly the misconception that the lighter appearance of diesel might imply diminished quality or performance. He reassured customers that despite the change in appearance, the fuel’s quality and performance parameters remain consistent with the standards set by the Standards Organization of Nigeria (SON). This clarification underscores Asharami Synergy’s dedication to transparency, integrity, and service excellence in the sector.
In support of this initiative, Engr. Oluwakayode Oyegoke, representing the Nigeria Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), commended Asharami Synergy for its role in educating the public and raising awareness about the new fuel specifications. Oyegoke emphasized the regulatory authority’s commitment to ensuring that all petroleum products in circulation adhere to the highest standards of safety, quality, and environmental sustainability. He also highlighted the broader implications of the transition to low sulfur fuels, including the potential to attract investment, generate employment opportunities, and significantly reduce Nigeria’s carbon footprint.
The collaboration between Asharami Synergy and the NMDPRA illustrates a shared vision for a cleaner energy future in Nigeria. By taking the lead in the adoption of environmentally friendly fuel standards, Asharami Synergy is not only contributing to the global fight against pollution but also setting a precedent for the entire Nigerian downstream sector. This partnership underscores the importance of regulatory support and industry commitment in achieving significant environmental and public health benefits. As the industry continues to evolve, initiatives like these pave the way for Nigeria to align with international energy trends and embrace cleaner, more sustainable fuel options.
