Ganduje Faces Suspension, Stirs Political Storm in APC

Ex-Governor Ganduje Challenges Suspension Amid Kano Political Battles

by Adenike Adeodun

The unfolding political drama surrounding the suspension of Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, the National Chairman of Nigeria’s All Progressives Congress (APC), has captured the nation’s attention. Ganduje, previously entangled in allegations of corruption, finds himself at the center of what could be seen as another significant power struggle within the APC, reminiscent of the ousting of former chairman Adams Oshiomhole.

Recently, news broke of Ganduje’s suspension from his role due to investigations into his involvement in alleged bribery, diversion, and misappropriation of funds totaling over $413,000 and N1.38 billion. This announcement stirred considerable controversy, particularly since it appeared to reflect internal conflicts within the APC and broader political maneuvering in Kano State. The legality and constitutionality of this suspension have been widely debated, with Ganduje’s supporters rushing to his defense, claiming the involvement of political impostors in the suspension process.

The immediate response from the Kano State chapter of the APC was to publicly disassociate from the suspension, suggesting that external forces, particularly the rival New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) led by Governor Abba Yusuf, were orchestrating the move to weaken the APC. Legal advisers and executives within Ganduje’s camp have been active, seeking judicial recourse to overturn the suspension, highlighting the intense factionalism within the state’s political landscape.

Ganduje has vocally attributed his political troubles to schemes by the NNPP and specifically blamed his former ally, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. He argues that these efforts are aimed at disrupting the APC’s dominance in Kano ahead of the 2027 elections, given the state’s significant electoral value. Ganduje has expressed his resolve to ensure that Kano remains a stronghold for the APC, supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

Nationally, this incident raises questions about the stability and unity of the APC. The party’s leadership, including the National Working Committee (NWC), has shown support for Ganduje, reflecting internal divisions on how to handle the crisis. High-profile visits and statements of solidarity indicate that significant segments of the APC do not support the suspension, viewing it as an illegitimate move by political adversaries rather than a legitimate disciplinary action.

The judicial system’s role in this saga has been pivotal. Following interventions from various courts, including a critical order from the Federal High Court in Kano, there seems to be a temporary legal shield for Ganduje, allowing him some respite from immediate political fallout. This judicial back-and-forth underscores the complexity of political conflicts in Nigeria, where legal and political realms frequently intersect.

Interestingly, the presidency has maintained a cautious distance from the controversy, possibly indicating the sensitive nature of the issue and its potential implications for national politics. The silence from higher echelons of government could be interpreted as a strategic pause, allowing for local party mechanisms to address the issue first.

Looking forward, the resolution of this conflict will be crucial for the APC’s cohesion and strategic positioning ahead of future electoral challenges. The party needs to navigate these internal conflicts carefully to maintain its national prominence and governance effectiveness. For Ganduje, the coming months will be critical in determining his political legacy and his role within the APC.

As this political drama unfolds, it serves as a reminder of the intricate and often turbulent nature of Nigerian politics, where allegiances are frequently tested, and political survival often depends on both legal acumen and strategic foresight.
