The Kano State House of Assembly has dissolved the four extra emirate councils that were instituted under former governor Abdullahi Ganduje, in a move that could potentially reinstate Muhammadu Sanusi II as the Emir of Kano. This momentous action may result in Sanusi’s reinstatement. Sanusi was controversially removed from office in 2020.
The four new emirate councils were dissolved after extensive discussions on the house floor, according to Deputy Speaker Muhammadu Bello Butu. The Kano State emirate council amendment bill passed through the second and third readings on Thursday morning thanks to the legislative body’s fast process.
Butu stated that the goal of regaining Kano’s previous status was the reason behind the decision to revoke the legislation that supported the establishment of the new emirates. He pointed out that the state’s cohesiveness and stature had been weakened by the dissolution of the Kano emirate, which had an impact on the recognition of the state at the federal level.
Majority Leader Lawan Hussaini Dala backed this position, pointing out that the establishment of the new emirates had upset the region’s culture, which the original emirate council had long been a guardian of. Dala claims that the amendment essentially dissolves and reorganizes all five emirate councils into a single body. This transition will be overseen by the commissioner for local governments.
The legislature passed a vote to create a new second-class emirate council within the state, which intends to improve local governance without lessening the historical and cultural relevance of the Kano emirate, in addition to undoing the modifications made by the previous administration.
There are strong signs, according to sources close to the state assembly, that Muhammadu Sanusi II’s reinstatement may happen soon. By the end of the day, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf is anticipated to sign the new legislation, officially restoring Sanusi to his previous role.
The possibility of Sanusi’s reinstatement follows an extended period of intense debate surrounding his overthrow, which many attributed to political motivations stemming from his vocal views on a range of social and economic concerns impacting the area. The removal of him sparked a great deal of discussion and controversy regarding the legitimacy of traditional leaders and their place in contemporary government.
Reactions to the decision to disband the other emirates and restore Sanusi have been conflicting. Proponents think it would strengthen cultural heritage and bring the state together, while opponents worry about the political fallout and the example it sets for government interference in private matters.
