Esteemed academic and leader Ayo Banjo passed away this week at the age of 90. Tributes poured in from Ajayi Crowther University (ACU) in Oyo State, Nigeria, where Banjo played a pivotal role in the university’s establishment and early development.

A Guiding Light for ACU

Banjo served as the pioneer Pro-Chancellor of ACU, a position that placed him at the forefront of the university’s growth. His leadership and commitment to academic excellence were lauded by current university leaders. In a statement, Chairman of the Governing Council Olutoyin Okeowo described Banjo as “a visionary leader whose legacy will forever be remembered.”

“Professor Banjo was not only a guiding light for our university but also a source of inspiration for countless students, faculty, and colleagues,” Okeowo said. Tributes emphasized Banjo’s role in fostering a culture of innovation and integrity at ACU. During his tenure, the university witnessed significant advancements, including the creation of modern facilities, the development of cutting-edge research programs, and the expansion of outreach efforts.

Beyond Achievements: A Mentor and Kind Soul

While Banjo’s professional achievements were undeniable, tributes also highlighted his personal qualities. Vice-Chancellor Adebayo spoke of Banjo’s compassion, wisdom, and generosity. He was known as a mentor who readily offered sage advice and a listening ear. His humility and kindness were cherished by those who knew him.

“As we mourn his passing, we also celebrate a life well-lived and a legacy that will continue to inspire future generations,” Adebayo said.

Banjo’s dedication to education extended beyond his role at ACU. Before becoming Pro-Chancellor, he served as chairman of the university’s implementation committee. He also held the position of chairman of the University Board of Trustees, succeeding Emeritus Prof Oladipo Akinkugbe.

A Void in the Nigerian Academic Community

Banjo’s passing leaves a significant void in the Nigerian academic community. His leadership and unwavering commitment to education will be remembered for years to come. The outpouring of tributes from ACU reflects the profound impact he had on the university and the wider educational landscape in Nigeria.

While details are still emerging, ACU officials have indicated plans to hold a memorial service to honor Banjo’s life and contributions to the university. The university is also exploring ways to incorporate his legacy into its future endeavors, ensuring his vision for academic excellence continues to guide ACU’s trajectory.
