Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has pointed to self-centered leadership as the main reason for the country’s ongoing struggles. Speaking at a Leadership Empowerment International Conference in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Obasanjo emphasized that many of Nigeria’s development challenges stem from leaders who lack the necessary knowledge, understanding, and commitment to serving their communities.
Obasanjo, who served as both a military and civilian leader, stressed that true leadership is about lifelong service. He argued that if Nigeria could solve its leadership issues, many other problems would fall into place. “Leadership that is self-centered, that lacks knowledge and understanding, and that doesn’t see service as the core of leadership is what’s holding Nigeria back,” he said.
He highlighted that Africa has abundant resources, but without effective leadership, those resources will not lead to progress. “We have 70 percent of the world’s copper, but if we don’t have the right leadership, it won’t take us anywhere,” Obasanjo noted.
At the event, which was organized by the South Africa-based Immanuel Theology Institute International, Obasanjo also discussed the importance of good leadership in creating a hopeful and prosperous Africa. He explained that strong leadership is essential for ensuring security, peace, and a vision for the future across the continent.
The conference also saw honorary doctorates in leadership awarded to 25 Nigerians, including former Ogun State commissioners Anthony Ojeshina, Kehinde Sogunle, and Dele Obadina, in recognition of their contributions to leadership and service.
Obasanjo’s remarks serve as a call to action, urging Nigerian leaders at all levels to prioritize the needs of their people and the development of the country over personal interests.
