The CEO of Binance, Richard Teng, has accused the Nigerian government of not providing proper medical care to Tigran Gambaryan, a company executive who has been detained for six months. Gambaryan was arrested over allegations of money laundering and conspiracy to hide the origins of over $35 million in illegal activities in Nigeria. Another person involved, Nadeem Anjarwalla, is reportedly on the run.
According to Teng, Gambaryan’s health has severely declined during his detention. He suffers from a herniated disc that has left him unable to walk, and despite his worsening condition, Teng claims that the Nigerian government has not provided even basic medical care, like a wheelchair.
Teng also expressed frustration that Gambaryan has not been allowed to meet with his legal team, even though his trial began on September 2. He stated that this lack of access is against Nigerian law. Although a court has ordered the government to release Gambaryan’s medical records, the government has yet to comply, even after several months. This week, Gambaryan was also denied a visit from his representative from the US consulate, which Teng called “inexplicable.”
“I am deeply worried about the long-term effects this could have on Tigran’s physical and mental health,” Teng said. “I urge the Nigerian government to let him return to the US on humanitarian grounds so he can get the medical care he needs and recover his health.”
