Lagos State is maintaining its supremacy in the current 2024 National Youth Games (NYG) holding in Asaba, Delta State with several swimmers making fantastic feat in the competition.
According to the Director of Public Relations of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Titi Oshodi, Lagos brought three more medals to the tally which brought the number of the team’s swimming medals that were won in the competition to four.
The silver medal in the 50m girls’ freestyle event went to Chioma Kanu to clinch gold, followed by Sokunbi Tobi who won gold in the 200m boys’ individual medley. While in boys’ 200m event, Ezumba Chidelu secured a silver medal.
The surge in performances of Lagos rising stars boosted our medal tally and more medals should be expected as the final phases of the competition take place at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, said Oshodi.
Lagos state athletes make a good shown in weight lifting, football and volleyball
According to The Punch, Lagos also recorded other sports, with welterweight, Sunday Emmanuel getting a bronze medal in the 49kg category, total lift of 111kg in weight-lifting.
Emmanuel achieved 50kg snatch and 61 kg clean & jerk in his first competition as a weightlifter and got him a place in the podium.
Speaking to Metro Lifestyle, Emmanuel said: “This is my first outing and I am lucky to have my mother, she inspired me and also African Champion Adijat Olarinoye.”
Also in football, the lady of Team Lagos defeated the host state, Delta with a 2-0 goal developed by Kashimawo Temilola and Kemi Adegbuyi.
The team is now preparing to make a come back in the football event in the forthcoming 2024 NYG.
In addition, the victory streak was followed in volleyball as the Lagos team triumphed over Bauchi 2-0 (25-20, 25-20) and in table tennis was Rabiu and Musbau Aisha/Faisat emerged as the girls’ doubles champions over Delta State.
