The police in Enugu State have begun an investigation following the killing of Stephen Aniago, the chairman of Ogbete Main Market Traders Association who was shot dead by unknown gunmen on Saturday evening.
Speaking on the development, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Daniel Ndukwe said the police have commenced preliminary investigation into the incident in its statement on Sunday.
As narrated by Ndukwe, the armed men attacked Aniago at Amechi Road area of Enugu, shot him and absconded with his car. Furthermore the responding policemen that attended the place quickly brought Aniago to a nearest hospital where he was pronounced dead by the physicians.
According to The Punch, “Preliminary investigation shows that the unidentified armed robbers, who were in a Toyota Corolla, betrayed and shot the man, then drove off with his blue-coloured Toyota Corolla,” Ndukwe said.
Police assure to ensure that aniago’s killers face justice
In a follow-up to this event, the Commissioner of Police, Kanayo Uzuegbu has called for more tactical squads to arrest the culprits. Also the police have disclosed that a tactical squad has been assigned to surveillance of the suspects, while Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State CID has been put in charge of a covert investigation of the case.
“According to CP Kanayo, the police will not rest in its effort in ensuring that culprit of this heinous crime are brought to book,” said Ndukwe.
The body of the deceased has been taken to a mortuary as the police continues with its probe into the death of Aniago. Police have appealed to its citizens to maintain calm and support the police in order to enhance quick solving of the case.
