The Lagos State Governor has confirmed that 241 unregistered automobile have been seized as a result of an enforcement campaign launched by the Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS). This, the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi stated, on Monday in a statement which he signed along with Bolanle Ogunlola, the Deputy Director, Public Affairs, Ministry of Transportation.
According to Vanguard, The enforcement action was executed in line with Sections 15 and 16 of the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law (TSRL) 2018 as the task force sought to arrest vehicles without proper registration. According to Osiyemi, operation of unregistered vehicle is unlawful in the state, stating that the act complicates efforts by the police to arrest intercepted vehicles for investigations to get to the owner until another person claims it was either stolen or has links to criminal activities.
Penalties for vehicles not registered
The commissioner pointed out that the continued use of unlicensed vehicles is counter productive to the aim of putting up safety measures across the state. Osiyemi also said that “operating a vehicle without proper registration or identification marks is a serious legal offence as enshrined in section 16 of the TSRL 2018”. He also said that a vehicle that was impounded had fake dealer number plate and the speculation of those who gave the fake number plate is ongoing to be arrested.
Osiyemi enjoined the motorists to obey the law noting that the level of compliance will assist the government in providing adequate security to all the users of the road. He cautioned that the government will continue to enforce various traffic laws with a view to keeping law and order in Lagos.
Call for compliance
Police enforcement of the traffic laws are some of the measures that the Lagos State Government is taking towards towards the provision of safety for the people to curb some of the vices that are associated with car jacking and other heinous crimes that have been on the rise in the country.
“It is, therefore, mandatory for drivers and other road users to adhere to the traffic laws in order to achieve our objective of addressing security challenges within the transport sector,” added Osiyemi. He urged all motorists to ensure that their vehicles are correctly registered and have identification markings to facilitate this, he urged that they update the identification marks to avoid being on the wrong side of the law.
The regime against unregistered vehicles will be proceeded because of a fight against unlawful activities in Lagos. The Ministry of Transport has urged motorists to act in a way that obeys the law and reduces the risk of accidents on the road.
