The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted thunderstorm and rain for three days nationwide, starting from yesterday.

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted thunderstorms and moderate rain in the country for three days: Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday.
NiMet called on residents to brace for heavy rains that could cause urban flooding in major Nigerian cities. This prediction was made in its report released on Saturday.

Thunderstorms and rains across regions

Thunderstorms with moderate rains occurred yesterday morning in parts of Gombe, Bauchi, Taraba, and Adamawa, according to NiMet. The thunderstorms will ground in northern region later in the day, covering Kaduna, Sokoto, Kebbi, Borno and other states.

NiMet further expects moderate rain in the morning over the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, Kwara, and Benue. More rain is expected in the afternoon in the North Central region.
Light rains will precede thunderstorms with moderate rains later in the day in southern states like Oyo, Imo, Edo, Rivers, and Lagos.

The weather conditions for monday and tuesday

NiMet predicts thunderstorms with moderate rains on Monday morning over parts of Taraba, Gombe, and Borno, while more storms will occur in the afternoon.

Morning rain showers will be heavy later in the day in states in the southern region, including Enugu, Bayelsa, and Delta.
Partly cloudy skies are expected in the northern part of the country on Tuesday morning.

However, Adamawa, Bauchi, and Gombe are liable to experience thunderstorms later in the day.
Lighter rains will fall early morning over Ogun, Rivers, and Delta, with moderate rains and thunderstorms likely in the afternoon.

Updated flood risks and safety advisories

The heavy downpours also raise the urban flooding risk in major cities, and NiMet warns residents to avoid flood-prone areas.
The report further points out that areas likely to be affected should prepare appropriate precautions.

According to The Punch, NiMet said in a statement that “residents are advised to adhere to safety advisories as been issued by relevant authorities.” The company also asked airline operators and other stakeholders to update weather reports in order to plan and operate effectively.

Finally, the weather agency advised Nigerians to continue to be cautious during the forecast period in a bid to avert any consequences of the heavy rains and thunderstorms.
