As part of his urban renewal agenda, Enugu Governor Peter Mbah has approved the relocation of two slums in the Enugu metropolis, Agu-Owa and Ugbo-Lawrence.
However sunday’s statement from the governor’s media office said the initiative was intended to turn these areas into modern communities.
Governor Mbah presided over a recent State Executive Council meeting where the government finalized the plan that Akpuoga Nike Estate was chosen to be the new residential area for people who will be affected.
A two bedroom flat and a Certificate of Occupancy will be given to each displaced family for their new property.
Urban renewal pilot schemes
This was confirmed by the State Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Mr. Gerald Otiji who said the government has identified 25 slums in the Enugu metropolis.
Furthermore these pilot schemes will be carried out at Agu-Owa nearby Trans-Ekulu and Ugbo-Lawrence in Independence Layout.
On the other hand, The Exco approved of the urban renewal and the relocation of urban slums. Otiji added, ‘we are starting with two pilot schemes— Agu-Owa and Ugbo-Lawrence.’ “Akpuoga Nike Estate, a gated community, with paved roads, electricity, sports facilities, and other amenities is where the residents will be relocated,” he added.
Development and cooperation: inclusive
The minister however assured residents that the government’s urban renewal plan does not aim to leave anyone behind. He urged the residents in the affected slums to work with authorities so that the program runs smoothly and benefits them fully from the project.
According to The Punch, This initiative also shows the state government’s promise in raising living standards with decent infrastructure development, new modern housing and a sustainable urban environment for its citizens.
