Governor of Kwara State Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has approved implementation of a new minimum wage of N70,000 for public workers, following the national body’s directive.
The approval followed a tripartite meeting at the Perm Sec level between the Government side and leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), Joint Negotiating Council (JNC) as well as representatives of organized private sector to iron out differences.
The new wage policy would take effect from October 2024 and it will impact all public workers including those in Kwara’s 16 local government areas, Dr. Hauwa Nuru, the Commissioner for Finance and Co-Chairman of the minimum wage committee, confirmed, Dr Nuru.
The policy, which Nuru heralded as a much needed policy to ease economic hardship in the state, was also praised by Nuru as a proof of the governor’s commitment to the well being of the state’s workforce.
It is a proactive step for workers’ welfare
Dr. Nuru said the governor’s decision to go ahead with the wage policy is an indication of the governor’s proactive approach and commitment to uplifting the livelihoods of public servants. She said the immediate implementation of this new wage ‘epitomizes the worker-friendly approach of Governor AbdulRazaq’ and that the wage adjustments ‘will also entail as many changes in the salary structure as obtains in the different strata of public service.’
The Commissioner also congratulated the efforts of the government and the labor unions for reaching this agreement which will be of much significance to workers on the current economic challenges they are faced with.
