The Labour Party (LP), led by Julius Abure, has unveiled an ambitious plan to expand its membership to over 20 million by 2027.

The initiative includes a nationwide online membership registration and revalidation exercise to strengthen its grassroots presence and influence.

Nationwide membership drive and congress timetable

The Labour Party has launched an online membership registration and revalidation campaign aimed at boosting its membership ahead of the 2027 general election.

According to a communiqué released by National Publicity Secretary Obiora Ifoh, this initiative is set to run from now until January 31, 2025.

“This first phase will update the ward register and prepare for ward congresses scheduled between February and March 2025,” Ifoh stated.

However, he urged members to revalidate their registration and encouraged new members to join through the online platform.

The party also announced a timetable for its congresses, which will run concurrently with the revalidation exercise. Aspiring candidates for ward-level positions have been advised to begin their preparations.

Push for electoral reforms

As part of its strategic goals, the Labour Party is focusing on electoral reforms to ensure credible, fair, and transparent elections in Nigeria.

Julius Abure, the National Chairman, emphasized the party’s determination to prevent a repeat of the challenges faced during the 2023 general election.

According to Punch, the party has set up an Electoral Reform Committee, chaired by Benedict Etanabene, with Okey Joe as Co-Chair and Dudu Manuga as Secretary. The committee is expected to submit its report within eight weeks.

Abure reiterated the party’s resolve to lead Nigeria out of its current struggles, stating, “Labour Party remains committed to becoming the largest political force in the country, with a vision to rescue the nation from stagnation.”

A vision for the future

The Labour Party is gearing up to position itself as a major player in Nigerian politics, leveraging its growing membership base and commitment to reform.

Moreover, the party believes its strategy will drive meaningful change and set the stage for success in the 2027 elections.

In addition, Abure expressed confidence in the party’s agenda, highlighting its focus on modern governance, electoral transparency, and citizen engagement as essential pillars for national transformation.
