Alhaji Muyideen Bello: A life devoted to Islamic scholarship

Bello, who was born in Ibadan in 1940, was well-known for his eloquence, profound knowledge of Islam, and unwavering dedication to advancing peace and harmony throughout his life. Prominent scholar Alfa Aribidesi of At-Tawdeeh Islamic Da’awah confirmed his passing Friday morning.

Alhaji Basit Olanrewaju, also known by his stage name Aponle Anabi, is another cleric and Islamic singer who confirmed Bello’s death on Facebook with emotional emojis.

Sheikh Taofeeq Akeugbagold, a well-known cleric, echoed the emotion, referring to Bello as his “father and mentor” and pleading for him to be granted Aljannah Firdaus, the pinnacle of Islamic heaven.

Although Bello’s burial plans have not yet been made public, unconfirmed rumours indicate that he would be laid to rest Friday night in accordance with Islamic customs.

Bello showed a remarkable enthusiasm for Islamic studies at a young age. In order to further his study of the Quran, he relocated to Ibadan at the age of nine to live with his uncle, an Islamic scholar.

He started speaking in public at the age of ten, which was the beginning of his quest to become one of Nigeria’s most powerful Islamic clerics.

In addition to pursuing formal schooling, Bello, unlike many priests of his era, obtained a National Certificate of schooling (NCE) and worked briefly in electronics, a trade he learnt from his brother. His famous quote, “I knew I would one day become an Islamic cleric, but I also wanted to ensure I had a job that put food on my table,” reflects his belief in striking a balance between religious knowledge and practical skills.

Fearless sermons and truth-driven teachings inspired countless followers

According to Punch, Bello was well known for his unwavering devotion to the truth in his preaching. “From my early years, I was known for speaking the truth regardless of whose ox is gored,” he frequently remarked.

Bello’s teachings inspired many followers and endured throughout generations, leaving an enduring impression on the Muslim Ummah in Nigeria and beyond. He was a ray of hope throughout difficult times because of his everlasting commitment to Islamic studies and support for harmony and enlightenment.

To comfort Bello’s family and pay tribute to his legacy, mourners have gathered at his Akobo home in Ibadan. His life is described as a monument to faith, wisdom, and spiritual leadership by many, who remember his powerful sermons and unrelenting search for the truth.
