  • New commission will regulate electricity generation, distribution, and supply.
  • Jigawa seeks to boost energy investment through public-private partnerships.

Jigawa State Governor Umar Namadi has signed the Jigawa State Electricity Regulatory Commission law, marking a key step in enhancing electricity regulation and service delivery across the state.

The law, which was signed on Monday at the Council’s Chamber, Government House, Dutse, aims to increase electricity access for residents while fostering a business-friendly environment for private sector investment in the power sector.

Governor Namadi emphasized the significance of the law, describing it as a critical move toward sustainable development and economic growth for Jigawa.

“This law is a vital step towards sustainable development and economic growth in Jigawa State,” he said.

The establishment of the commission is part of the broader strategy to address the state’s growing energy demands. It follows the creation of the Ministry of Power and Renewable Energy earlier this year.

The ministry, led by Commissioner Dr. Sirajo Musa, has been tasked with delivering sustainable energy solutions for the state’s residents.

Commission to regulate electricity generation, distribution, and supply

The new Jigawa State Electricity Regulatory Commission will be responsible for overseeing electricity generation, transmission, system operation, distribution, and supply throughout the state.

This regulatory body will support electricity solutions across grid, mini-grid, and off-grid systems, utilizing both renewable and non-renewable energy sources.

By adopting a comprehensive approach, the commission aims to meet the increasing demand for energy, support innovative solutions, and position Jigawa as a leader in energy access.

“The Jigawa State Electricity Regulatory Commission will regulate various electricity solutions, including grid, mini-grid, and off-grid systems, utilizing both renewable and non-renewable energy sources,” Governor Namadi explained.

According to Punch, he noted that the initiative aligns with the federal government’s larger electrification agenda.

Through this approach, the Jigawa government aims to enhance the efficiency and reliability of power distribution in the state.

The emphasis on renewable energy further highlights the state’s commitment to clean, sustainable energy sources.

Public-private partnerships to drive energy development

The newly signed electricity regulatory law also promotes public-private partnerships (PPPs) to boost energy infrastructure and improve service delivery.

By inviting private sector participation, the state government seeks to accelerate development in the power sector, strengthen energy distribution, and support sustainable economic growth.

The PPP model encourages collaboration between the government and private sector players to fund, build, and operate energy projects in the state.

This model is expected to increase investor confidence and facilitate the entry of private firms into Jigawa’s power sector.

Additionally, Governor Namadi stressed the importance of this collaborative model, noting that the establishment of the commission would attract private sector investment, create jobs, and improve electricity availability across Jigawa State.

“The creation of the Ministry of Power and Renewable Energy earlier this year demonstrated our administration’s focus on energy development,”

Namadi added. “The establishment of the Jigawa State Electricity Regulatory Commission is expected to improve electricity availability and stimulate economic growth across the state.”
