FG launches Greater Dutse Water Supply Project to aid 1.5M residents
The Federal Ministry of Water Resources’ director of communication and public relations, Mrs. Funmi Imuetinyan, made the announcement in a statement on Friday.
Prof. Joseph Utsev, Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, said the project is a revolutionary step that aims to address a 10 million liter daily water supply shortfall. He clarified that years of careful preparation and the Federal Executive Council’s endorsement, led by President Bola Tinubu, made the project possible. It is anticipated that the project will be finished in 24 months.
As part of the project, 35 industrial boreholes with solar-powered pumps will be built, and a 1,000 m³/hour water treatment plant and related infrastructure will be installed. To provide effective water distribution, Braithwaite tanks and reinforced concrete storage tanks will be built at key locations.
In addition, the proposal calls for building solar panels and transformers, supplying generators to power the project, and laying 56.6 kilometers of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipelines for the transmission of water.
Facilities for workers and administration will also be built to help with project management and operation.
Multifaceted benefits include economic growth and clean water access
The minister emphasized the project’s many advantages, highlighting its capacity to boost economic growth, generate jobs, and increase access to safe and clean drinking water.
A special Project Implementation Unit has been formed, with officials from the Jigawa State Government, the Hadejia Jama’are River Basin Development Authority, and the Ministry of Water Resources, to guarantee timely completion and adherence to financial allocations.
The Federal Government’s dedication to addressing the ongoing water shortage in Dutse and its surroundings was praised by Governor Umar Namadi.
As stated by Punch, he hailed the project’s line with President Tinubu’s commitment to giving infrastructure and essentials top priority and called it a major development milestone for the state.
By solving long-standing water problems and promoting regional development, the Greater Dutse Water Supply Project is a revolutionary stride forward for Jigawa State.
