The Emir expressed his sadness over the event in a statement released on Sunday and signed by Abdulazeez Arowona, his spokesperson.

According to the statement, “Alhaji Dr. Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, the Emir of Ilorin, expressed sadness over Jimoh AbdulQodir’s death in police custody, describing it as a rude shock and regrettable incident.” “Seeing a bright young man pass away under such cruel conditions is heartbreaking.”

AbdulQodir’s death was confirmed by the Kwara State Police Command, which also stated that he was detained following his arrest on December 19 for a N220,000 debt owed to a person known as Peter.

AbdulQodir passed away the next day, December 20, according to police.

The deceased’s family questioned the police claim that AbdulQodir committed himself by hanging while being held.

A family member stated, “They said he hanged himself inside the cell with his clothes.” However, my brother was too tall to have committed himself in that tiny jail.

A police officer who reportedly ordered his younger brother to abuse him is linked to the person my brother owed money to. He had bruises all over his body, his face was swelled, and blood was dripping from his nostrils.

The family has called for higher authorities to step in and accused the police of a cover-up.

DSP Ejire-Adeyemi Toun, the public relations officer for the Kwara State Police, stated in a statement that the command has opened an investigation into the incident.

Punch Online previously reported that Inspector General Egbetokun visited AbdulQodir’s family in Ilorin and pledged to bring about justice.
