Damagum Says Opposition Needs PDP for 2027 Success

KEY POINTS

  • Damagum says PDP is needed to unseat Tinubu in 2027, for opposition.
  • It highlights how PDP has survived the defectors in past and has remained successful.
  • Calls on Kwankwaso to return to PDP to reinforce the opposition.

Umar Damagum, the acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has posited that the party is the only opposition party that can unseat President Bola Tinubu in 2027.

In an interview with the BBC Hausa Service on Tuesday, Damagum was dismissive of recent comments by Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, the 2023 NNPP presidential candidate, that there would be no NNPP/PDP/LP combination.

PDP’s enduring legacy

The PDP is the strongest opposition party and it was not destroyed, it was resilient and achieved alot of programmes, Damagum said. This is the only party that can win elections when it is not in power, as the PDP does. They cannot unseat the ruling APC if four parties merge without us, he said.

Kwankwaso owed his political journey to the PDP and that he should retreat to his original home of the PDP, he added. The PDP remains the best party for Kwankwaso. Damagum said the party nurtured his career and we hope he will help us rebuild and confront this oppressive government.

Responding to Kwankwaso

Kwankwaso’s claim that the PDP is dead is also far from the truth because the party is still winning governorship and legislative elections nationwide, Damagum said. Kwankwaso and others left PDP in 2015 but the party didn’t collapse.” It instead has emerged stronger and is continuing to produce governors and lawmakers across the country,” he argued.

While the PDP has faced challenges in the past, the chairman acknowledged but said they have overcome those challenges and still remains a force to reckon with in Nigerian politics. In over two decades the PDP has kept its ground and its influence.” ‘The facts speak for themselves,” Damagum concluded.
