Julius Abure, the National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), has guaranteed a level playing field for all aspirants in the race for the party’s ticket in the November governorship elections in Anambra State.
Abure made this promise after Dr. George Moghalu, the former Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority, submitted his expression of interest and nomination forms at the party’s secretariat in Abuja on Friday.
The Labour Party chief also emphasized that he has no anointed candidate for the upcoming April 5 primary election, insisting that the people of Anambra and the LP members would decide who would carry the party’s flag in the November race.
“I want you to take it to the bank that it is the people of Anambra and, more precisely, LP members, who will determine who flies the party ticket,” Abure said.
He also appealed to Moghalu to focus on winning the hearts of the people in the state, especially the party members, who will be responsible for electing the candidate.
Abure made it clear that the LP will not engage in godfatherism and that the process will be free, fair, and credible. “There will not be any anointed aspirant. The process will not be skewed towards one person, and we have no personal interest,” he added.
Abure calls for unity, emphasizes party values
The LP leader highlighted that the party was open to receiving credible individuals, praising Moghalu’s track record and expressing confidence that, if given the chance, he could make significant contributions to the people of Anambra.
Earlier, Moghalu expressed his gratitude for the opportunity and promised not to disappoint the party.
According to Punch, he assured Abure that he was committed to the governorship race with the goal of winning the election and ultimately defeating the incumbent Governor Charles Soludo.
“I am going into this race with the determination to win, and we shall win by the grace of God,” Moghalu said.
He further acknowledged that power ultimately belongs to God and that he was making himself available for the race.
Labour Party encourages disciplined participation
Abure also stressed the importance of discipline within the party.
He urged those interested in joining the LP to drop their egos and ambitions and follow the party’s rules.
He emphasized that for the party to succeed in Anambra, it must remain focused, organized, and disciplined.
