The governor’s commitment came during an engagement with the Amotekun Corps leadership at the State House in Harare on Wednesday.

Adeleke noted that the Amotekun Corps plays a crucial role in securing the state, and highlighted the importance of equipping the force to perform optimally.

At the meeting, the Amotekun Corps’ chairman, Assistant Inspector General of Police (ret.) Wale Abbas, listed key needs, including vehicles, motorcycles, communication gadgets, and firearms to enhance operations. In response, Adeleke assured the Corps that their requests would be met.

“The security of Osun is a top priority, and I understand the needs of Amotekun,” Adeleke said.

“We will provide you with the necessary equipment such as vehicles, motorcycles, and communications gadgets to ensure you can serve the public effectively.”

Strengthening the legal and operational framework

The governor emphasized the necessity of robust legal structure for Amotekun Corps that received additional legal support through recent legislation.

Under the newly amended law, they have more opportunities to be an integral part of the state’s security structure.

The governor emphasized the importance of the Corps’ coordination with other security agencies, including the police and the Department of State Services.

“Under the new legal framework, Amotekun can operate more efficiently, and we expect this to translate into a better security environment for our people,” he added.

Adeleke encouraged the Amotekun Corps leadership to remain vigilant and ensure that operatives who do not adhere to the rules are promptly removed.

He stressed that the public’s trust in the force is paramount.

Amotekun to receive support for improved facilities

In addition to new equipment, Adeleke revealed that there would be an emphasis on constructing new, modern vending stalls and infrastructure to improve the working environment for Amotekun officers.

According to Punch, Adeleke also mentioned plans for micro-financing and training programs for the security personnel to further boost their capabilities.

During the event, AIG Wale Abbas thanked Governor Adeleke for his support, noting that the Amotekun Corps had successfully trained 1,150 cadets, a testament to the administration’s commitment to improving security.

Abbas also outlined the Corps’ needs, including modern surveillance drones, body armor, and tactical gear, to improve operational safety.
