Key Points

  • Lagos State issued an official warning against Korope drivers using unauthorized routes and conducting illegal parking activities.
  • LASTMA will intensify their traffic violations enforcement activities.
  • All commercial vehicles need to limit their operation to official bus stops as per regulations for reduction of traffic congestion.

The Lagos State Government (LASG) issued a strong official notice about violations of unauthorized routes and unlawful parking by commercial bus driving teams operating minibuses known as ‘Korope.’ The current traffic management and safety improvement efforts of the state make up this initiative.

Ensuring traffic order and safety

According to a public statement issued by Special Adviser Sola Giwa to the Governor on Transportation on Tuesday, ordinary traffic rules must be followed. He declared unauthorized route deviations as a major problem and requested every ‘Korope’ operator to stop conducting such unauthorized deviations.

He declared that any illegal conduct will lead to legal repercussions. Giwa informed that the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) will intensify its enforcement activities to control reckless driving and traffic-blocking behaviors in roads, and he urges to heed as Lagos warns of unauthorized routes and unlawful parking.

Work to eliminate illegal parking along with unapproved loading zones

The leader of LASTMA presented illegal parking as the leading factor behind traffic jams within the city. According to Giwa all commercial vehicle operators need to avoid public road usage for unsanctioned parking and loading because both practices generate substantial delays while creating safety threats for other roadway users. As per his direction all commercial bus operators need to follow the official bus stops and terminals.

Lagos warns on impact on public safety and traffic flow

Finally at the end of the statement Giwa clearly stated that the government maintained strict opposition against unlawful parking and route violations that now threaten traffic movement and public security. Public safety together with road user security demands all buses to follow established routes according to his statement.
