The African Democratic Congress (ADC) is grappling with mounting anxiety after Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) launched a sweeping investigation into some of its top-ranking members over alleged corruption and financial impropriety.

Party insiders say the probe, which began quietly weeks ago, has escalated in recent days with investigators reportedly summoning senior officials for questioning.

According to a report by the Punch news, the EFCC is said to be scrutinizing party accounts, campaign finance records, and large transactions linked to past electoral cycles.

The development has sent shockwaves through the party, with some members expressing fears that the investigation could damage the ADC’s public image ahead of upcoming state and national elections.

“This is a critical moment for us,” a senior member told reporters, requesting anonymity. “We have to navigate this without losing credibility.”

The EFCC has not released an official statement naming those under investigation, but sources familiar with the matter said at least three top officials have been invited for interviews.

Allegations under review reportedly include misappropriation of campaign funds, questionable procurement deals, and irregularities in party-led constituency projects.

Political fallout looms as opposition watches closely

Analysts say the EFCC probe could be politically damaging, not only because of the legal implications but also due to the optics of a corruption scandal in an opposition party that has positioned itself as a cleaner alternative to Nigeria’s dominant political blocs. Rival parties have already seized on the news to question the ADC’s moral standing.

“There’s a lot of political capital to be made from this,” said Lagos-based political analyst Sola Adeyemi. “Whether or not the charges stick, perception alone can weaken a party’s momentum.”

In a formal statement, ADC representatives affirmed that the party is prepared to fully assist investigators and conveyed their confidence that no misconduct will be discovered.

The statement said, “We are dedicated to accountability and transparency.” “We think this procedure will clear our name.”

Although the investigation’s timeline is still unknown, insiders anticipate additional summonses and potential arrests in the upcoming weeks.

According to reports, the EFCC, which has intensified its anti-corruption efforts in recent months, is committed to wrapping up its review before the next election cycle starts in earnest.
