KEY POINTS

  • Police clear Paul Adefarasin after viral stun gun video.
  • Investigators confirm device was non-lethal and not a firearm.
  • Case discontinued despite earlier warnings on stun gun use.

The Lagos State Police Command has cleared Pastor Paul Adefarasin of House on the Rock Church after a viral video showed him holding what appeared to be a firearm inside an SUV.

Police said Wednesday that Adefarasin voluntarily appeared for questioning at the command’s headquarters in Ikeja, where investigators determined the object in question was a stun gun.

Police say stun gun not a firearm

According to police spokesperson Abimbola Adebisi, the investigation included an interrogation and a cautionary statement from the pastor. Authorities concluded the device was non-lethal and did not warrant prosecution.

“The Lagos State Police Command has determined there are no sufficient grounds to proceed with the matter. The case is hereby discontinued,” the statement read.

Earlier warning on stun gun use

The decision contrasts with remarks made in June by the state commissioner of police, Olohundare Jimoh, who said pointing a stun gun at someone could constitute a criminal offence. Jimoh had explained that such devices fall under restricted riot control equipment.

At the time, he said that both Adefarasin and the person allegedly threatened in the video would be questioned.

Pastor denies holding a firearm

The viral clip, recorded in June, showed Adefarasin seated in a Range Rover during an exchange while holding the device. The pastor consistently denied ever brandishing a gun, stressing that it was a non-lethal object.

The police command said it remains committed to transparency, public safety and upholding the rule of law while responding to public concerns.
