The Federal Government has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic deaths of 39 Nigerians in recent stampedes during food distribution events.
These incidents, which occurred in Ibadan, Abuja, and Okija, have raised urgent concerns about crowd safety, particularly during the festive season.
Government’s condolences and call for action
Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris, in a heartfelt statement, offered condolences to the victims’ families and those affected.
He described the incidents as “deeply saddening” and emphasized that no one should lose their life while seeking basic assistance.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, and all those affected by these unfortunate incidents,” Idris said in a statement through his media aide, Rabiu Ibrahim.
According to Punch, the Minister urged individuals and organizations hosting charitable events this season to collaborate with the police and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).
By doing so, he said, they can ensure effective crowd control and prevent further tragedies.
Unity over blame
Idris also addressed growing attempts to politicize the incidents.
He stated that these tragedies should not be linked to the economic reforms introduced by President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
“It is worth noting that similar unfortunate occurrences have been recorded in the past, before the current administration,” Idris said. “Making any attempt to link these tragedies to the President’s reforms is unfounded and disingenuous.”
He called for unity and shared responsibility during this difficult time, highlighting that these reforms aim to foster sustainable economic growth and protect Nigeria’s most vulnerable citizens.
Prioritizing safety this festive season
As Nigerians prepare for the Yuletide season, Idris reiterated the need for safety to remain a priority.
He encouraged organizers to adhere to the directive of Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, which underscores the importance of crowd management at large gatherings.
“Let us ensure that this festive season is marked by peace, goodwill, and safety for everyone,” Idris added.
The Federal Government’s call for caution and collaboration with security agencies is a reminder to prioritize the well-being of all citizens.
This tragic loss of life shows the need for vigilance and care in public gatherings, particularly during times of celebration.
