KEY POINTS
- FAAN urges airlines to review schedules for smooth holiday operations.
- Weekly coordination meetings aim to improve passenger experience.
- Airport facilities upgraded for safety, sanitation, and power reliability.
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has asked airlines to revisit their flight schedules ahead of the Christmas and New Year rush to reduce delays and cancellations.
Managing Director Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku made the announcement during a retreat in Abuja themed “Future-proofing FAAN: Leadership, Modernisation and Strategic Renewal.”
FAAN has increased the frequency of stakeholder meetings from quarterly to weekly, involving airlines, ground handlers, and other critical partners. Kuku said the initiative aims to ensure timely dissemination of flight information, smooth operations, and a seamless passenger experience throughout December and January.
“Crucially, we must ensure that all our airports are safe, secure, and welcoming spaces for our guests,” Kuku said. “We are working closely with airlines and the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority to review schedules and manage delays proactively.”
Airports upgraded for safety, power, and sanitation
FAAN is also working on problems with how airports run, such as broken cooling systems, inconsistent power supplies, and cleanliness issues. Kuku added that facility managers are working to improve hygienic standards. Partnerships with distribution firms and better backup systems are also meant to make sure that power stays on, especially in Lagos.
The agency has also reported significant growth in revenue since December 2023, driven by both aeronautical and non-aeronautical streams. Non-aeronautical revenue has gone up by more than 50 percent, and aeronautical income from landing, parking, and passenger service fees is still meeting its goals.
Kuku stated, “We are on track to make sure FAAN stays a self-sustaining agency.” He also claimed that better coordination and improvements to infrastructure will make holiday travel safer and easier for passengers.
FAAN’s proactive measures concerning FAAN flight schedules reflect a strategic effort to modernize operations, improve passenger satisfaction, and strengthen Nigeria’s aviation infrastructure during peak travel periods.
