The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has escalated its demand for the suspension of Farouk Ahmed, Managing Director of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), citing serious allegations of corruption. The students’ union said the move is necessary to allow for an unbiased investigation and restore public confidence in the agency’s leadership.

In a statement issued Tuesday, NANS President Usman Nagwaza said the renewed call follows what the union described as sustained attempts by detractors to frustrate advocacy for transparency, accountability, and good governance. “We want to state in all clear terms that NANS is resolute in its demand for the suspension of Farouk Ahmed and will not be swayed by attempts to distract from the issue,” Nagwaza said.

Allegations raise questions about Farouk Ahmed’s integrity

The student body described the allegations against Ahmed as grave, questioning his ability to continue in office while probes are ongoing. “The allegations made against Farouk Ahmed are serious and have raised questions about his integrity and fitness to hold public office. As such, it is imperative that he steps aside to allow for a thorough investigation, devoid of influence or interference,” the statement added.

NANS also reiterated its call for decisive presidential action, urging President Bola Tinubu to suspend Ahmed immediately. The association emphasized that Nigerians deserve full disclosure on the matter and warned that leaving Ahmed in office could compromise the investigation.

Students warn of nationwide mobilisation if demands ignored

The union further cautioned that attempts to derail its campaign would fail. NANS said it is closely monitoring developments as it counts down to the expiration of a 72-hour ultimatum previously issued to authorities. “We will not hesitate to take further action, including mobilisation of our structures across the country, upon expiry of the ultimatum, to ensure that justice is served,” the statement said.

Reaffirming its determination, NANS stressed that the matter would be pursued to its conclusion. Nagwaza added, “We are committed to seeing this matter through to its logical conclusion, and we will not back down until justice is served.” This shows that the federal government is still under pressure to act on the corruption claims.
