The Nigeria passport services are on the brink of a revolutionary overhaul, promising citizens enhanced convenience and efficiency. The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, unveiled an ambitious plan to introduce home delivery and digitize the passport application process. Starting in February 2024, Nigerians will have their passports delivered to their chosen locations, whether it be their homes, offices, or other preferred spots. This monumental shift is set to transform the way citizens acquire this essential document.
The process begins in January next year when Nigerians can complete passport applications online, marking a significant departure from the traditional, time-consuming methods. Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo expressed confidence in this move towards greater convenience, stating, “We have initiated the automation of our end-to-end passport application process, setting a timeline for Nigerians to experience a more streamlined service.”
In addition to home delivery, the government plans to expand its global footprint by establishing 12 new visa application centers. This expansion aims to enhance accessibility for travelers and facilitate the visa application process, making international travel more convenient for Nigerians. Furthermore, efforts are underway to bolster the visa-on-arrival policy and enforce the principle of reciprocity, ensuring fair treatment for travelers from different countries. This move is expected to foster better international relations and promote seamless travel experiences.
Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo also raised concerns regarding the duplication of identity registration within the country, including Bank Verification Numbers (BVNs), passports, National Identity Numbers (NINs), and SIM card registrations. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has issued a directive to harmonize these identity numbers, streamlining data management and enhancing security.
“Identity is not just a mere concept; it defines who we are and what we stand for. However, the current landscape is marred by redundant registrations. It’s high time we restored the integrity of our travel documents through data harmonization,” emphasized Tunji-Ojo. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive, part of the Renewed Hope Agenda, aims to consolidate and optimize data management across government agencies. This approach promises to simplify processes, reduce costs, and bolster national security, ultimately benefiting all Nigerians.
