POWA President, Dr Egbetokun Elizabeth has today donated relief materials worth millions of naira to the wives of police officers who were hit by the recent flooding in Maiduguri, Borno State. The distribution was done on Thursday at Borno State Police Command.

During the distribution, Dr. Egbetokun said that she felt touched by the news on flood incident that killed over 30 people and affected million others. Since the day I heard of the flood disaster, I have not been the same person; every day, I keep on imagining the officers’ wives whom I were told were left stranded. Today I am happy; I have met them and have been able to assist them with relief items,” she said.

Articles and support for victims

The relief items that were given were; 25kg bags of rice, beds, soaps, wrappers and writing materials for the children of the bereaved families. Dr. Egbetokun told the women not to give up but to rise up and rebuild their lives.

The recipients applauded the support saying that the aid would greatly assist them and help them recover the wonderful feeling of acceptance. The visit was followed by the relief distribution which many families getting out of the flooded areas benefited and this assisted in boosting their morale.

Flood impact in Maiduguri

According to Vanguard, The flood was so terrible that 70 percent of the city of Maiduguri the capital city of Borno state was submerged thereby leading to destruction of both public and private property. Accumulated water breakages destroyed homes, property and basic infrastructure and rendered many residents, especially families with children in desperate need of assistance.

The visit and relief donations by Dr. Egbetokun confirms POWA’s readiness to assist police families and equally ensures them adequate help they require to overcome the impacts of natural disaster.
