The Defence Headquarters has responded to recent threats by former militant leader Asari Dokubo, who claimed he could defeat the Nigerian military and shoot down military helicopters.
In a bold statement, the military challenged Dokubo to come to the battlefield to test his assertions, emphasizing their readiness to neutralize him if he followed through on his threats.
Military brushes off Dokubo’s threats
Asari Dokubo, in a statement made on October 5, 2024, had threatened to shoot down a military helicopter flying over his residence and declared that he had the capacity to face the Nigerian military.
In response, Maj. Gen. Edward Buba, the Director of Defence Media Operations, dismissed Dokubo’s threats, stating that the claims were “laughable” and underscored that the military would address him only on the battlefield if he dared to act on his words.
Buba said, “To claim that he can shoot down military helicopters is quite amusing, and while I am tempted to laugh, we must remain professional and respect democratic principles. The military will not act on mere words without due process.”
However, Buba reiterated that Dokubo’s boast did not intimidate the military, assuring that any confrontation on the battlefield would end in the former militant leader’s neutralization.
According to Punch, he further called on relevant security agencies to address the matter, noting that the military was not the sole security authority in the country.
Defence Headquarters maintains professional stance
In a pointed remark, Maj. Gen. Buba stressed that the military operates within the law and cannot act arbitrarily based on provocative statements.
However, he left no doubt about the military’s capabilities, stating that Dokubo did not possess the capacity to face the armed forces.
“We are in a democratic system, and we are bound by professional conduct. But let me assure you, if he shows up on the battlefield, we will take him out. He should come and see whether we can react or not,” Buba added.
The military, Buba emphasized, would continue to fulfill its constitutional duties, ensuring the safety and security of all Nigerians.
While Dokubo’s claims might incite concerns, the military remained focused on protecting national security interests and maintaining peace across the country.
Other security forces urged to take action
Although the military was clear about its stance, Buba highlighted that other security agencies also have roles to play in addressing Dokubo’s provocative remarks.
He urged relevant authorities to take appropriate actions to ensure that such statements are handled through proper channels.
Buba concluded by reaffirming the military’s readiness to confront any threat, stating, “Our duty is to engage on the battlefield when necessary. The public should rest assured that the Nigerian military remains prepared to defend the nation against any threat, including Dokubo’s empty claims.”
