Party leadership and some strategic moves
The meeting which involved several governors from the PDP focused on the leadership of the party and the recent decisions that have been taken by the NEC.
Umar Damagum the party’s Acting National Chairman has been in the middle of such decisions especially as the PDP tries to build a strong party system for the next general election.
As reported by Tribune Online, the governors are interested in keeping the PDP together, given the problems the party has, particularly in leadership changes and sustaining support at the state, regional and national levels.
They included debates of the pertinent measures to be taken in order to ensure that the party stands the test in the political arena.
The contribution of PDP governors to the party’s development
The PDP governors are strategic stakeholders in the party, whose responsibility it is to ensure that the party performs well in national and state elections.
Since the NEC was recently involved with decisions as to party leadership and other strategic measures to be taken, the governors are now desirous of keeping the party members in harmony, thus dealing with the rebellion or any opposition looming.
The meeting also discussed the preparations for the future elections; the governors stressed the necessity of uniting the party and developing a strategy which will be attractive for the voters.
Thus, with Damagum at the helm in an acting capacity, the emphasis is on maintaining the stability of leadership, as well as on the solution of the most important policy and governance challenges that may affect the PDP’s electoral prospects.
Cooperation and internal processes at the core of the discourse
PDP needs to address issue of internal unity in its effort towards finishing as one of main opposition parties in Nigeria. The meeting revealed that the party needed to suppress internal conflicts and encourage cooperation between groups within the party.
As the general elections come up in 2024, power stability and effectiveness are considered crucial to the PDP’s victory.
It is strategic for the governors meeting to be held in order to address these challenges and build a solidarity which is missing in the party concerning presenting a harmonized and strategic political outlook.
