Former House of Representative member, Farouk Lawan says his release from Kuje Custodial Centre marks a new chapter in his life.

Lawan who had received a prison term in 2021 for unlawfully obtaining and accepting a $500,000 bribe from businessman Femi Otedola had described the day as one to be thankful for his reunion with his family and friends.

Lawan’s release & drawing reflections on a new chapter

Lawan, also addressing reporters after his release, said he was thankful to God, his family and friends for standing by him through the trial period. Moreover he said today that he is grateful to be in good health and high spirits as he begins a new chapter in his life.

Furthermore he confirmed Lawan’s release, saying that he completed his sentence, his spokesman, Adamu Duza, of Federal Capital Territory Command of the Nigeria Correctional Service, said.

Background and history of the case against bribery and conviction

In 2021, court convicted Lawan of seeking $3 million from Femi Otedola to keep Zenon Petroleum and Gas Ltd off the list of companies accused of embezzling funds from the government fuel subsidy scam.

Also at the time of the bribery case, which grabbed national headlines, he was a member of the House of Representatives representing Bagwai/Shanono constituency of Kano state.

According to Vanguard, release of Lawan puts an end to a big chapter in his legal war and a milestone of looking forward to the future.
