At the recent AfIGF in Abuja, Nigerian leaders presented a vision for a digital Africa. Led by Dr. Bosun Tijani, they highlighted Nigeria’s role in digital governance.
Dr. Tijani spoke virtually about President Tinubu’s commitment to international collaborations. He said, “We must keep the internet open, safe, and beneficial.” Attendees included African lawmakers and stakeholders.
The forum discussed topics like cybersecurity, digital rights, and economic development. Tijani praised the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the Local Organizing Committee for their 2023 AfIGF event management.
NCC’s Prof. Umar Danbatta talked about Nigeria’s digital achievements. He mentioned increased broadband access and contributions to GDP. Nigeria, this year’s host, wants to share experiences and learn from other nations.
Dr. Mactar Seck from UNECA thanked the NCC for supporting the event. He urged African countries to unite for collective economic growth.
Honourable Samuel George from Ghana stressed the need for a pan-African approach. He said, “Africa needs laws to support young tech innovators.”
This year’s AfIGF theme was about digital transformation in Africa. A post-event communique gave resolutions and suggestions for attendees to implement back home.
After the 11th Africa School of Internet Governance, the AfIGF focused on growing Africa’s digital economy. Agencies like the Association for Progressive Communications supported the events.
With digital transformation crucial for Africa, Nigeria is taking proactive measures to lead the conversation.
