Senate Warns Bola Tinubu Against Unlawful Spending in N100bn CNG Bus Initiative

by Victor Adetimilehin

The Nigerian Senate has issued a stern warning to President Bola Tinubu, cautioning him against illegal spending in his N100 billion Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) bus initiative. In a bid to ensure transparency and compliance with the law, the Senate has advised Tinubu to seek approval through a supplementary budget for his ambitious CNG project.

This development comes on the heels of President Tinubu’s recent announcement of measures aimed at mitigating the impact of fuel subsidy removal on the Nigerian populace.

While commending Tinubu for his visionary CNG initiative, Senator Jarigbe Jarigbe, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Gas, emphasized the importance of adhering to budgetary procedures and legal protocols. He insisted that any expenditure involving taxpayers’ money must receive the National Assembly’s approval, including projects within the gas value chain.

Senator Jarigbe also cautioned against resorting to “Ways and Means” for extra-budgetary spending, asserting the readiness of the legislature to support initiatives that benefit the people.

In his statement, Senator Jarigbe stated, “The President should not embark on extra-budgetary expenditure because it would be inconsistent with the provisions of the law.”

He further expressed the Senate’s commitment, under the leadership of Senate President Godswill Akpabio, to support Tinubu’s ambitious programs. Senator Jarigbe suggested that a 2023 supplementary budget would be the most appropriate avenue to secure funding for the CNG infrastructure, CNG vehicles, and the necessary training and workshops.

President Tinubu, in his Independence speech, emphasized his dedication to alleviating the hardships faced by Nigerians. He announced the deployment of cost-effective and environmentally friendly CNG buses nationwide, which are expected to operate at significantly lower fuel prices, benefiting commuters.

Tinubu also highlighted plans to establish training facilities and workshops across the country, offering opportunities for transport operators and entrepreneurs.

As the nation awaits further developments, it is evident that the Senate is determined to uphold fiscal responsibility and ensure that government spending aligns with legal requirements.

While the Senate’s cautionary stance is clear, it is important to note that President Tinubu’s CNG bus initiative has the potential to revolutionize public transportation in Nigeria. By transitioning to compressed natural gas, the country can reduce its reliance on costly fossil fuels, mitigate environmental impact, and lower transportation costs for citizens. If executed transparently and in compliance with the law, this initiative could be a significant step towards a more sustainable and affordable transportation system.

In conclusion, the Senate’s vigilance in overseeing government expenditure is a crucial aspect of democratic governance. However, it is equally essential to strike a balance between accountability and supporting initiatives that can improve the lives of Nigerians. President Tinubu’s commitment to addressing the challenges of fuel subsidy removal and investing in cleaner transportation solutions deserves careful consideration and collaboration between the executive and legislative branches.
