The Nigerian military high command has intensified efforts to identify and eliminate safe havens used by violent extremists, with significant results. Nigerian security forces on the frontlines have successfully neutralized fifty (50) terrorists in their recent operations and rescued fourty-nine (49) hostages in just one week.
The Director of Defence Media Operations (DMO) revealed that these safe havens have been critical in supporting the activities of insurgent groups. The armed forces have continuously adapted their strategies to counter the changing tactics of extremist groups operating throughout the country. The focus is on replacing uncertainty with certainty and securing the nation.
One of the main challenges in establishing security and stability is the presence of safe havens utilized by violent extremist groups for many years. These safe havens have facilitated the flow of funding, weapons, fighters, and command and control, all of which support acts of terrorism and insurgency. Safe havens are scattered across various regions, including the northeastern tumbuns, national parks, game reserves, and forests. The military has identified several of these locations and is working to dismantle them.
A recent operation in Aku Forest in Okigwe Local Government Area of Imo State uncovered disturbing activities, including reports of cannibalism among extremists. During the past week, these operations have resulted in the neutralization of 50 terrorists and the arrest of one hundred and fourteen (114) individuals involved in extremist activities.
In addition to counter-terrorism efforts, troops have also cracked down on oil theft. During operations in the Niger Delta area, they prevented oil theft amounting to N968,160,050.00. The operations led to the recovery of 65 assorted weapons and 400 rounds of ammunition. Troops also discovered and destroyed 54 dugout pits, 66 boats, 138 storage tanks, 253 cooking ovens, and various other equipment used in illegal refining activities. They seized large quantities of stolen crude oil and illegally refined petroleum products.
While some safe havens extend beyond Nigeria’s borders, the military’s objective is to eliminate these havens within the country’s territory. The ongoing operations aim to enhance the protection of citizens and restore security nationwide. The military encourages citizens to report any information that can assist in these efforts. Despite the challenges posed by extremist groups and the criminal activities, the government remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of its people. The recent successes in targeting safe havens and rescuing hostages demonstrate great progress in these efforts.
