The governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu, aged 67, passed away on Wednesday morning following a prolonged health battle. Akeredolu, a respected Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), former president of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), and Ondo’s ex-Attorney General, was in his second term as governor.
Affectionately known as Aketi, Akeredolu was celebrated for his fearless approach to leadership and unyielding personal beliefs. As chairman of the Southern Governors’ Forum, he played a pivotal role in advancing significant reforms, notably in the realm of security. His most notable achievement was the establishment of the South-West Security Network, also known as Amotekun.
According to a report by The Nigerian Inquirer, Akeredolu’s tenure was marked by his outspokenness against injustice and oppression. Despite being a member of the same ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as then-President Muhammadu Buhari, he was a staunch critic of the administration, particularly vocal in the wake of an attack on a Catholic church in his hometown, Owo.
Akeredolu’s advocacy extended to state police and restructuring, themes he championed until his last moments. His recent re-election was overshadowed by health controversies, leading to his eventual transmission of power to his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, before a medical leave in Germany.
Born in Owo, Ondo State, Akeredolu’s educational journey took him through prestigious institutions, culminating in a law degree from Obafemi Awolowo University. His leadership skills were honed early on, advocating for justice and equality as a student union leader.
Beyond politics, Akeredolu was a devout Christian, known for his dedication to mentorship and social service. He contributed to various sports and legal organizations, reflecting his diverse interests and commitment to community development.
Akeredolu’s death is a significant loss to Ondo State and the broader Nigerian political scene, leaving behind a legacy of resilience, advocacy, and unwavering commitment to the betterment of his state and country.
