In a significant development aimed at restoring peace and stability in Nigeria’s South East region, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has made a firm commitment to quell the rising tides of insecurity that have plagued the area. This pledge was made at the official launch of the Peace In South East Project (PISE-P), an initiative led by the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu. The event, held in Bende Local Government headquarters, Abia State, was a pivotal moment for the region, drawing attention to the urgent need for peace and stability.

Represented by Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima, President Tinubu expressed deep concern over the economic and social turmoil caused by non-state actors in the South East. He acknowledged the region’s vital role as an economic powerhouse within Nigeria and emphasized the federal government’s determination not to remain passive in the face of these challenges. The president’s message was clear: the government would actively intervene to restore order and ensure the region’s economic and social fabric is not irreparably damaged.

The South East’s economic significance was highlighted, with the president noting its integral role in Nigeria’s economy. The region, known for its entrepreneurial spirit and economic prowess, has suffered considerably due to the activities of these non-state actors. President Tinubu’s address made it clear that the time for decisive action had arrived, with a strong message that “enough is enough.” The perpetrators and sponsors of insecurity were urged to reconsider their actions and commit to a peaceful resolution for the benefit of all.

President Tinubu’s representation at the event underscored a national commitment to the South East’s well-being, reflecting a broader vision for Nigeria’s unity and prosperity. The president’s call for all stakeholders to join the PISE-P initiative highlighted the interconnectedness of Nigerian states and the collective impact of peace in the South East on the entire country.

The Deputy Speaker, Hon. Kalu, emphasized the PISE-P’s aim to promote peace, unity, and development in the region, advocating a non-kinetic approach to addressing the security challenges. He stressed the importance of reconciliation and healing for communities and individuals affected by past conflicts.

Governor Hope Uzodinma, speaking on behalf of South East Governors, reiterated their commitment to restoring peace and thanked President Tinubu and the Vice President for their support and solidarity with the people of the South East. He pledged continued collaboration with other regions for a peaceful and united Nigeria.

The President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, expressed appreciation for the federal government’s efforts and urged a swift and comprehensive approach to addressing the root causes of agitation and tension in the South East.

The event was graced by prominent figures, including the Obi of Onitsha, HRM Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe, who called for the Federal Government’s attention to the South East, emphasizing the need for inclusivity and a sense of belonging. Other dignitaries included governors, representatives from the National Assembly, traditional leaders, and various stakeholders, all united in the cause of peace and development in the South East.

The occasion also featured a grand civil reception for the Deputy Speaker and the conferment of the chieftaincy title of “Enyioha 1” on the Vice President, symbolizing his status as a friend to all.

The event marked a significant step in the collective effort to restore peace and stability in the South East. It highlighted the importance of a united approach, involving all levels of government and community leaders, to address the underlying issues of marginalization, economic challenges, and governance that have contributed to the region’s insecurity. The PISE-P initiative stands as a testament to the resilience and determination of the South East’s people and the Nigerian government’s commitment to ensuring a peaceful and prosperous future for all its citizens.
